Urge your supermarket to ban bee-toxic pesticides

Bees and pollinators are struggling, with their populations plummeting. Scientists have named pesticides as one of the key drivers of these insect declines, which are having rippling effects up the food chain and driving the nature crisis.

Despite the mounting evidence, pesticides that are highly toxic to bees continue to be used within the global supply chains of all ten of the UK’s largest supermarkets.

UK supermarkets have huge global footprints and the power to make change. They urgently need to ban bee-toxic pesticides – such as neonicotinoids – and support growers around the world to adopt more sustainable, non-chemical alternatives.

As one of your customers, I am writing to urge you to do more to protect bees and pollinators from harms caused by pesticides used in your global supply chains. In particular, I am calling on you to:

<li> Ban the use of pesticides that are highly toxic to bees including (but not limited to) all neonicotinoids, fipronil and permethrin.</li>
<li> Require your suppliers to monitor pollinator activity and provide the data to the company so that you are able to understand how farming is impacting pollinators and support growers to adopt bee-friendly practices.</li>

Recent studies have revealed major declines in global pollinator populations, with pesticides named as a key driver. Close to 75% of the world’s crops depend on pollinators for sustained production, yield and quality. The cost of pollinating crops artificially would cost an additional £1.8 billion per year in the UK alone. You are in an incredibly powerful and unique position to help tackle the nature crisis by driving a transition towards farming with nature, instead of against it.
